The causeway is a favorite site for local birders. There are numerous places along the causeway to pull off the road and park while you scan the cove. In winter, birders frequent the causeway that separates Sears Island from the mainland. If it’s uncomfortably cold, you can watch wintering waterfowl from the warmth of a parked, heated vehicle. At high tide, especially, you can get close-up views of Pie-billed and Horned Grebe, Common Goldeneye, Bufflehead, American Black Duck, Common Loon, and occasionally Barrow’s Goldeneye. Bald Eagle frequent the island and are often seen near the causeway. The island itself is a mix of wetlands, fields, edge habitat, and upland forests, mostly fir and spruce.
