This chapter on the birding areas around the Marathon area includes descriptions of the bird-watching at these various destinations: Long Key State Park, Curry Hammock State Park, Marathon Airport, Crane Point Museum of Natural History, Boot Key, Bahia Honda State Park and National Key Deer Refuge. Marathon Airport is an excellent location on summer evenings to listen for feeding Antillean Nighthawk. Common Nighthawk also feeds here. The only sure way to separate these two species is to learn their distinctly different calls (“pity-pit-pit” for Antillean, “peent” for Common). Seasonally wet areas at the west end of the airport (MM 51) may attract migrating waterfowl and shorebirds. The specialty birds in this birding area include: Magnificent Frigatebird, “Great White” Heron, Reddish Egret, Roseate Spoonbill, Bald Eagle, White-crowned Pigeon, Mangrove Cuckoo, Burrowing Owl, Roseate Tern, Least Tern, Antillean Nighthawk, Gray Kingbird, Black-whiskered Vireo and Peregrine Falcon.
