The 307-acre North Lake is the major source of the Black River. Averaging about 18 feet deep, having a maximum depth of roughly 50 feet, its shoreline is mostly forested. The bottom is strewn with rocks and huge boulders. The lake has suffered acidification problems in the past, wiping out all the fish for a while, including those in the Black River just downstream. Dan Buehler, the local forest ranger, says that strict air pollution laws have resulted in the condition remedying itself. The 486-acre South Lake is the second source of the Black River. It averages about 25 feet deep and has a maximum depth of 60 feet. Its shoreline is moderately developed with private camps. Key species: Tiger muskie, yellow perch, brook trout, lake trout, and brown bullhead.
