Springing from the foothills of the Adirondacks, this river has three branches in its upper reaches, mostly on private property. It gathers them together about 1 mile east of Russell to form the main stem. From this point, the river slices north for about 50 miles—mostly canoeable—to feed the St. Lawrence River at Massena. Key species: Brown trout, brook trout, walleye, northern pike, smallmouth bass, and muskellunge.
