Surrounded by wild forest and wilderness areas, the 2,842-acre Piseco Lake averages 58 feet deep and has a maximum depth of 125 feet. Its cottages and lakeshore businesses offer the only civilization for miles around. The 1,600-acre Sacandaga Lake’s entire northern half is in the Jessup River Wild Forest. It averages roughly 25 feet deep and has a maximum depth of 60 feet. It is connected to Lake Pleasant by a navigable channel. The 1,504-acre Lake Pleasant has an average depth of 29 feet and a maximum depth of 65 feet. Although surrounded by roads, it is far enough off the beaten path to discourage crowding. It is connected to Sacandaga Lake by a navigable channel. Springing from the Silver Lake Wilderness, the West Branch Sacandaga River runs north, then northeast, for about 20 miles to join the main stem at the Sacandaga Public Campground. The East Branch Sacandaga River pours out of the west side of Gore Mountain, snakes around a bit in the Siamese Ponds Wilderness, then comes to NY 8 and follows it south for a good 10 miles before feeding the main stem at the NY 8/NY 30 junction, 8 miles east of Speculator. The beautiful Main Stem Sacandaga River is deceiving. Although it is loaded with dynamite-looking trout habitat, the vast majority of it gets too warm in summer to support salmonids. Key species: Lake trout, brook trout, brown trout, rainbow trout, walleye, chain pickerel, landlocked Atlantic salmon, lake whitefish, northern pike, and smallmouth bass.
