Located within the Debar Mountain Wild Forest, the 56-acre Mountain Pond averages 9 feet deep and has a maximum depth of 29 feet. Averaging about 3 feet deep and having a maximum depth of 10 feet, Barnum Pond covers 89 acres and has sprawling wetlands equal its size along the south shore. Black and Long Ponds are located north of the St. Regis Canoe Area. They are popular destinations with hikers and canoeists. Both were reclaimed with chemicals in 1997 and now support Windfall-strain brook trout indigenous to New York. The 73-acre Black Pond is completely surrounded by forest and has an esker running along its west bank. Its average depth is 20 feet and the maximum is 45 feet deep. Spread over 14 acres, Long Pond is completely surrounded by forest, shrubs, and wetland. Averaging 9.5 feet deep and dropping to a maximum depth of 20 feet, it feeds Black Pond. Two dams—one at the canoe launch on the pond’s outlet, the other on the channel halfway to Black Pond—prevent fish movement between the two. The 979-acre Lake Clear averages 28 feet deep and has a maximum depth of 60 feet. Its shoreline is partly developed with private homes and camps. Also known as Mill Pond, the 103-acre Lake Clear Outlet averages 3.6 feet deep and has a maximum depth of 8.5 feet. It is a weedy place, and its north shore is lightly developed with private residences. Key species: Brook trout, largemouth bass, brown trout, landlocked Atlantic salmon, northern pike, largemouth bass rainbow smelt, yellow perch, and pumpkinseed.
