Spawned in the shadow of Mount Marcy, the highest peak in the Adirondack Mountains, the splendid West Branch Ausable River runs independently for about 30 miles before linking up with the East Branch at Au Sable Forks. Along the way it undergoes many changes in character—everything from flowing quietly and gently through fertile mountain meadows to raging whitewater squeezed between austere mountain cliffs. Every trout habitat imaginable can be found in its path, earning the West Branch a reputation as one of the greatest trout streams in the Northeast. The outlet of Upper and Lower Ausable Lakes, the East Branch Ausable River flows north for about 25 miles to join the West Branch at Au Sable Forks. Relatively mild mannered compared to its sibling, the East Branch is far safer and easier to wade. Formed by the union of the East and West Branches in Au Sable Forks, the wide, shallow Main Stem Ausable River runs northeast for about 16 miles to feed Lake Champlain. Key species: Brook trout, brown trout, steelhead, landlocked Atlantic salmon, and rainbow trout.
