Bordered by New York, Vermont, and the Canadian province of Quebec, this international waterway covers 452 square miles (289,280 acres)—an area so vast, local politicians have declared it the Sixth Great Lake. Averaging 64 feet deep, with a maximum depth of 403 feet, it has 587 miles of shoreline and seventy islands. Site of major battles during our wars with England, Lake Champlain’s floor is littered with shipwrecks. Key species: Lake trout, landlocked Atlantic salmon, walleye, largemouth bass, smallmouth bass, northern pike, sauger, pickerel, smelt, channel catfish, burbot, and panfish.
