Short Take: 45,400 acres; clear water, rocky shorelines and cliffs, gravel points, numerous tributary creeks and coves, no vegetation. With the exception of Toledo Bend Reservoir in Texas and Louisiana, it is doubtful any lake in the United States has created as many bass fishing legends as has Bull Shoals Lake in northwestern Arkansas. The number of bass fishermen who learned their trade here and went on to become prominent in the sport or industry— personalities like Virgil Ward, Charlie Campbell, and Forrest Wood to name just three—is amazing, but there’s a good reason why it happened. Shortly after impoundment in 1951, Bull Shoals began producing truly awesome catches, and anglers from far and wide traveled here to take part in the action. Those were the halcyon days of American bass fishing, of course, but today, nearly half a century later, this 45,400-acre lake on the White River continues to produce excellent fishing. The lake can be extremely challenging due to the generally clear water, but largemouths weighing more than 13 pounds have been caught here, as have smallmouths topping 7 pounds. Primary Species: Largemouth, smallmouth and spotted bass.
