Short Take: 38,000 acres; very deep, clear water with abundant underwater structure, islands, little shoreline cover except in tributaries, no vegetation. Mickey Bruce never wanted to catch the bass, but the fish gave him no choice. He and friend Cliff Craft were practicing for a tournament, and another boat had just pulled up behind them in the same cove. The largemouth had swallowed Bruce’s jig and was heading home. “I don’t really know exactly how much the bass actually weighed,” laughs Bruce as he recalls the day, “but after I landed it we measured it as best we could. The bass was exactly as long as the inseam on my pants, which is 30 inches, and its open mouth matched my cap size, which is 7 3/4.” At least three bass over 17 pounds (the largemouth record is 17-9) have been caught in the lake, and he can verify two of them. Lanier, however, is not known as a trophy largemouth lake. The largest spotted bass on record from the lake weighed 8 pounds, 5 ounces, but numerous fish over 7 have been caught. Lanier is also popular for its striped bass fishing, especially during the winter months when 20-pounders can occasionally be taken on minnow-imitation crankbaits. Primary Species: Spotted, largemouth, and striped bass.
