Short Take: 45,000 acres; channels and ledges, large tributaries, very little vegetation. Old-timers in the tackle shops around Eufaula still talk about the day 25 years ago when Tom Mann and his fishing partner, David Lockhart, broke the bank. On a warm July day in 1972, the two anglers brought in 25 bass weighing just under 155 pounds—an amazing average of more than 6 pounds per fish. Lockhart’s 13-pound, 2-ounce fish took big bass honors, but he’s sure he lost an even larger fish that broke his 25-pound-test line. Officially named Walter F. George Reservoir but more commonly known as Eufaula because of its location in the beautiful city of Eufaula, this southeastern Alabama impoundment probably enjoys one of the most storied histories of any lake in America. Mann’s and Lockhart’s day came during its peak when big bass and heavy stringers were the norm; today, nearly half a century after construction began on the two-and-a-half-mile-long dam across the Chattahoochee, Lake Eufaula still offers visiting anglers an occasional reminder of what those glory days were like. Primary Species: Largemouth bass.
