Short Take: Numerous lakes plus river/canals; basically shallow, heavy vegetation, canals lined with riprap. Few, if any, of America’s lakes and rivers have ever evoked as many mixed emotions as has central Florida’s Kissimmee Waterway, a series of lakes connected by the Kissimmee River and man-made canals. If you’re an environmentalist, you may deplore the channelization done by the Corps of Engineers that changed the natural dynamics of the river, but if you’re a bass fisherman, you may love the Waterway for the fishing action it can provide. The Kissimmee Waterway in its entirety embraces nearly two dozen lakes between the city of Kissimmee and Lake Okeechobee, a distance of about 97 miles. The majority of these lakes are actually much closer to Kissimmee, and in this chapter, only two are being considered: Tohopekaliga and Kissimmee, which are the two best-known bass fisheries in the chain. A series of navigable locks, spillways, or canals separate all of the lakes, so it is possible to fish anywhere in the system with a minimum of effort. Launching ramps are located throughout. Primary Species: Largemouth bass.
