Short Take: 39,000 acres; generally clear, deep water with rocky bluffs, islands, underwater reefs. The joy of fishing Lake Martin is not knowing what you’ve caught until you see it, for this is probably the best lake in Alabama, as well as one of the better lakes in the South, for catching both quality largemouth and spotted bass. In many reservoirs these two species utilize different habitat, but on this clear, 39,000-acre impoundment the fish frequently swim together. Created in 1926 by a dam across the Tallapoosa River, Lake Martin has long been recognized for its spotted bass action, with fish as heavy as 6 pounds certainly not unheard of. Charlie Brewer, for example, developer of the famous Slider light tackle fishing system, has used Lake Martin as one of his testing lakes for many years, and frequently catches 50 to 75 spotted bass a day on his little 4-inch plastic worms and 6-pound-test line. “I have fished all over the United States,” says Brewer, “and I have to rank Lake Martin right at the top of my list of favorite lakes because of the sheer number of fish it has. Primary Species: Largemouth and spotted bass.
