Short Take: 15,263 acres; narrow river conditions in the upper end and more open water, pockets, flats, and tributaries in the lower end. If ever an impoundment deserved to be described as “two lakes in one,” it is Alabama’s Lake Logan Martin. One of six reservoirs sandwiched along the Coosa River about an hour’s drive east of Birmingham, the upper 16 miles of this lake are little more than the Coosa itself, while the lower 32 miles feature more open-water lake-like conditions, with points, coves, shallow flats, and deeper structure. Sometimes, it’s actually hard to decide which part of the lake to fish, because both areas can offer excellent fishing. Some of the better tributary creeks flow into the river in the upper end, while the lower lake provides excellent action off the deeper points and ridges. Together, both portions total 15,263 acres. Three Bass Masters Classic world championships have been held here, in 1992, 1993, and again in 1997, with winning weights for the three-day event ranging from 34 to 59 pounds. And at one time, Logan Martin held the record for the state’s heaviest largemouth, a 14-pound, 11-ounce giant. Primary Species: Largemouth and spotted bass.
