The fishing off Georgia’s coast is very good. Anglers can find charter opportunities all along the Georgia coast. If you have your own boat, there are plenty of live bottoms, wrecks, and other destinations to explore. Most offshore fishing is done around structure, natural and manmade. Live bottoms are rocky outcroppings on the ocean’s floor that provide a solid footing for the growth of sponges, sea fans, corals, and other marine organisms. These areas are usually ancient shorelines that are now submerged. The reefs are excellent habitat for worms, crabs, and small reef fish. Schools of baitfish also find the reefs to their liking and the combination of food and shelter draws in the larger predatory fish. Live bottoms are scattered off the Georgia coast and most are found well offshore. Black sea bass, grouper, snapper, amberjack, barracuda, and mackerel are common in these areas. All artificial reefs built by the state are buoyed to aid anglers in locating them. Towers rise up to 150 feet above the ocean’s surface and trespassing on them is forbidden. The towers attract baitfish and predators, including bluefish, tuna, amberjack, king mackerel, barracuda, dolphin, wahoo, and sailfish. Other offshore areas that attract fish include wrecks, jetties, buoys, floating objects, drop-offs, and even changes in water color or tidal nodes and rips. Anything that is different from the surrounding area is going to attract fish.
