Designated a National Seashore in 1972 to preserve the scenic, scientific, and historical value of Georgia’s largest and most southerly barrier island, Cumberland Island offers great fishing for a variety of inshore species, especially big red drum. The list of every species an angler could catch around Cumberland Island would be a long one. The area offers good-sized fish too; several Georgia record fish have been caught from the waters surrounding Cumberland Island. Key species: red drum, spotted seatrout, whiting, shark, tarpon.
