Found on Saint Simons Island, one of Georgia’s fabled “Golden Isles,” the pier offers anglers a chance at nearly any nearshore species. Saint Simons Island was the site of Georgia’s first military outpost. Fort Frederica, now a national monument, was established in 1736 by General James Oglethorpe. In 1742, Oglethorpe’s troops defeated Spanish invaders in the Battle of Bloody Marsh, fought in Saint Simons’ coastal forests. Rock-hard timber from live oak trees cut and milled on the island was used in many Revolutionary War–era warships, including the USS Constitution, better known to American school children as “Old Ironsides.” During the plantation era, cotton was king on Saint Simons Island. Saint Simons and the Golden Isles are popular Georgia vacation destinations. The island offers a little something for everyone with golf, shopping, beaches, fishing charters, and more. Key species: red drum, Spanish mackerel, flounder, shark, croaker, spot, yellowtail, others.
