With many twists and turns, the middle Altamaha River has plenty of the channel-bend type of habitat favored by huge flathead catfish. State-record flathead catfish weighing more than 60 pounds have been caught from this stretch of the river. The midsection of the Altamaha River is not much different from its upper reaches. The river is wide and meandering as it steadily makes its way to the Atlantic. The additional watershed gained with the influx of a major blackwater tributary, the Ohoopee River, gives the middle Altamaha the feel of a big river. The riverbanks on this section are sparsely populated, and the river definitely has an Old South ambiance. One fish camp in particular is somewhat of a local historical landmark. Plenty of anglers use the river, but with all the space and fish available, crowding and competition should not be a problem. This section of the river has several good access points and campgrounds, presenting you with several options on where to launch your boat. Key species: flathead catfish, largemouth bass, redbreast sunfish.
