Fort Stewart is not only the home base of the 3D Infantry Division (Mech) “The Rock of the Marne,” but is also home to about 20 ponds and lakes totaling more than 1,450 acres available for public fishing. Fort Stewart is the workplace of thousands of America’s service men and women who get to take advantage of some of the best small fishing lakes in Georgia. Many Fort Stewart lakes are intensively managed and provide good fishing for largemouth bass, bluegill, redear sunfish, crappie, and catfish. Some ponds at Fort Stewart are managed for certain species. A few ponds are managed for catfish anglers, although bream and bass will likely also be present. Some ponds have good bank access, others have virtually none. Boats are allowed on all the ponds, but not every pond has a boat ramp. With one exception, the ponds are limited to electric motors only. A small johnboat or canoe is a good choice for fishing the lakes on the post. A smaller boat can be car-topped or carried in the bed of a pickup truck to the more remote fishing holes. Key species: largemouth bass, bluegill, redear sunfish, redbreast sunfish, crappie, channel catfish.
