Jutting out into the Atlantic Ocean 18 miles east of Savannah, Tybee Island offers great saltwater fishing from a boat, pier, or in the surf. Best way to fish: boat, pier, surf. Reputedly taking its name from a Native American word meaning “salt,” Tybee Island’s past is as colorful as its present. Known for its laid-back attitude and individuality, 2.5 miles long by 0.75 mile wide Tybee Island and its beaches are popular with tourists and day-trippers in the summer. The rest of the year, the island’s 4,000 or so residents go about their business of enjoying their island community in their own unique way. The island is also known as a former hotbed of backroom gambling and illegal drinking, a summer home for Savannah residents, and a retreat for writers and artists. Tybee Island has a lot to offer the angler. Several piers, public beaches, and marinas and boat launching facilities are all available to help the angler get to the fish. Food, lodging, and supplies are all available on the island. Key species: shark, whiting, sheepshead, flounder, Spanish mackerel, many others.
