Lazaretto Creek is one of two creeks that make Tybee Island an island. With both a public fishing pier and a boat ramp, the Lazaretto Creek access point is a good choice for any type of angler. The western end of Tybee Island once was a quarantine station for sick passengers coming in off ships. Unfortunate passengers thought to be carrying a communicable disease were quarantined for up to four months, and if they died, they were buried on the spot. “Lazaretto” is an Italian word for an institution or hospital for those with contagious diseases, and the name was applied to the creek that separated the quarantined Tybee Island from the mainland. The Lazaretto Creek boat ramp is a good starting point if you intend to fish the Savannah River entrance or the open waters and tidal creeks around Tybee Island. Fishing from the pier provides a good view of the shrimp boats docked across the creek. Food, lodging, and supplies are 2 miles away on Tybee Island. Key species: whiting, sheepshead, spotted seatrout, red drum.
