A blackwater river that drains part of the Okefenokee Swamp and serves as part of the Georgia-Florida border, the Saint Marys is one of Georgia’s most beautiful coastal rivers. The Saint Marys is a blackwater river. Very high dissolved organic carbon levels give the water its coffee-like appearance. The Saint Marys drainage is the smallest of Georgia’s five coastal rivers. The river drains a part of the Okefenokee Swamp, and like the swamp, the water is acidic and fish populations are modest. However, this does not mean the Saint Marys is not a worthy destination. The river is unique, the scenery is outstanding, and while the Saint Marys is not known for the number of bass it gives up, it is known for larger-than-average fish. Besides bass, the river also contains large redbreast sunfish. The Saint Marys is one of the few coastal plain rivers in southeast Georgia that have escaped colonization by non-native flathead catfish. Hopefully it will stay that way. Key species: largemouth bass, redbreast sunfish, bluegill.
