Georgia’s newest large reservoir, Lake Richard B. Russell reached its full pool of 26,650 acres in December 1994. The reservoir is an USACE multipurpose project on the Savannah River in Georgia’s Piedmont region. Best way to fish: boat, shore. Because Lake Russell is managed for fish and wildlife and is undeveloped, it escapes much of the boat traffic that Georgia anglers are so familiar with on other reservoirs. Lake Russell impounds the Savannah River and the Rocky River. About 25 miles of the lake’s Savannah River arm is part of the Georgia–South Carolina border. The Rocky River flows into Lake Russell from Lake Secession in South Carolina. The needs of fish and anglers were kept in mind during the construction of the lake. Some forested areas were left standing, and thousands of acres of trees were topped at 12 to 35 feet below normal pool level. The cutting pattern left a ring around the lake from the shoreline out to about the 30-foot depth that is mostly free of trees, but anglers have rectified this situation by placing brush piles in this generally narrow band of water. In addition, both Georgia and South Carolina fisheries agencies have placed fish attractors around the lake. Russell is a deep lake and its waters stay relatively clear year-round. Key species: largemouth bass, spotted bass, crappie.
