The Toccoa River below Blue Ridge Dam is arguably the best tailwater trout fishery in Georgia. Plenty of feisty fish and little fishing pressure make the Toccoa a good choice for big-water trout fishing. From Blue Ridge Dam to where it crosses into Tennessee (and takes on the name “Ocoee River”), the Toccoa River offers about 15 miles of good fishing for trout and perhaps even a few smallmouth bass. Compared to most Georgia trout streams, the Toccoa is big water. Long, deep pools separated by rocky shoals make the river perfect for floating using a tube or canoe. At high water, wading can be a problem. At low water, expect to do some dragging if you are in a canoe. Low water conditions are best fished by floating in a canoe and then getting in the water to fish. Because this section of the Toccoa River flows through private lands, access is limited. However, several public parks and road crossings provide angler access to the river and make floating from one point to another an option. Since the operation of Blue Ridge Dam significantly affects the water level, safety should always be foremost. The onset of generation, unannounced and sometimes unscheduled, brings sudden and dramatic changes in the river. When wading, always keep a close eye on a benchmark rock, fallen tree, or other objects in the river.
