The only major road in the Keys, US 1, runs 110 miles from Key Largo to mile marker 0 at Key West. Everybody refers to the mile markers along the route when giving directions (“Joe’s Bait Shop is at mile 63"), and the terms “bay side” and “ocean side” are used to distinguish one side of the road from the other. Many of the old highway bridges, bypassed by newer spans, are open for anglers to use. Anglers come here to fish for snook, redfish, spotted seatrout, and tarpon, and to enjoy the spectacular scenery. Captain Ned Lentz, one of five guides operating out of Flamingo Lodge, says there is more to fishing this area than catching a fish every few casts. Here, you can see an alligator and a crocodile in the same glance, then turn your head and watch a flock of a hundred birds. When fishing in this area, look beyond your cast; the scenery is magnificent.
