This eTrail covers 2 different fishing destinations in these Florida counties including Kissimmee River and Lake Okeechobee. The Kissimmee River, currently undergoing massive restoration after it was forced into man-made channels by the US Army Corps of Engineers, promises to return to the days when it held a productive fishery. Fishing in the channelized parts of the river is limited to a small section of the river’s original course that again holds water. There is some largemouth bass fishing in the restored part of the river. At 450,000 acres or 730 square miles, the Big O is the largest freshwater lake in Florida and one of the largest in the United States. Its fishing reputation matches its size. Despite recent pollution problems, Lake Okeechobee provides outstanding bass and world-class spec (crappie) fishing.
