Caswell Memorial State Park is a genuine riparian jungle. The overstory consists of huge valley oaks and cottonwoods, festooned with grapevines. The understory is a thicket of brambles, wild rose, and poison oak. Summer can be hot, but spring and fall are delightful; so is winter except after heavy rains, when the Stanislaus River might flood. Specialty birds: Resident—Wood Duck; Acorn and Nuttall’s Woodpeckers; Yellow-billed Magpie; Oak Titmouse; Bushtit; Wrentit; Spotted Towhee. Summer—Swainson’s Hawk, Ash-throated Flycatcher, Black-headed Grosbeak. Winter—Golden-crowned Sparrow. This eTrail provides detailed information on birding strategies for this specific location, the specialty birds and other key birds you might see, directions to each birding spot, a detailed map, and helpful general information.
