Gray Lodge is an attractive area, with a mix of habitats. It doesn’t have as many places where you can look across expanses of water as at Sacramento National Wildlife Refuge, but it has more riparian habitat. If the weather is not foggy, a dominant nearby feature is the Sutter Buttes. The buttes are the remnants of an ancient volcano that once stood on the site, and are the only interruption in the general flatness of the Central Valley for its entire length. Specialty birds: Resident—Wood Duck, Cinnamon Teal, White-tailed Kite, Burrowing Owl, Nuttall’s Woodpecker, Yellow-billed Magpie, California Towhee. Winter—Greater White-fronted and Ross’s Geese; Eurasian Wigeon; Sandhill Crane. This eTrail provides detailed information on birding strategies for this specific location, the specialty birds and other key birds you might see, directions to each birding spot, a detailed map, and helpful general information.
