The Oroville Dam lies just 5 miles upstream from the city of Oroville, and at 770 feet is the highest dam in the United States, slightly higher than Hoover Dam. The forebay and afterbay are part of the electrical generation system. Feather River is one of the major tributaries of the Sacramento River. Specialty birds: Resident—Golden Eagle, Western Bluebird, Phainopepla, Lesser Goldfinch. Summer—Black-chinned Hummingbird, Western Kingbird. Winter—Western and Clark’s Grebes; Osprey; Bald Eagle; Ferruginous Hawk; Prairie Falcon; Mew, Glaucous-winged, and Thayer’s Gulls; Say’s Phoebe.
