The Modoc Plateau is California’s “big sky” country, a land of wide open spaces, vistas, and mountains. Dominant plants are sagebrush, juniper, and ponderosa pine. The dry sagebrush flats are interspersed with marshes and spring-fed rivers. It is a different kind of country, and considered part of the Great Basin. Specialty birds: Resident—Bald and Golden Eagles; Prairie Falcon; Black-backed Woodpecker; Black-billed Magpie; Mountain Chickadee; Cassin’s Finch. Summer—Western and Clark’s Grebes; Cinnamon Teal; Sandhill Crane; Black Tern; Gray Flycatcher; Cassin’s Vireo; Juniper Titmouse; Mountain Bluebird; Sage Thrasher; Brewer’s Sparrow; Yellowheaded Blackbird; Bullock’s Oriole.
