Butte Valley is a large valley lying at an elevation of about 4,200 feet. Much of the valley is occupied by Meiss Lake, which has been heavily diked and altered to create farmland and seasonal wetlands. The lake is now part of Butte Valley Wildlife Area, and to the north and east of the wildlife area is the Butte Valley National Grassland, a mix of public and private ownership. Specialty birds: Resident—Bald and Golden Eagles; Prairie Falcon; Black-billed Magpie. Summer—Western and Clark’s Grebes; Cinnamon Teal; Swainson’s Hawk; Sandhill Crane; California Gull; Black Tern; Violet-green Swallow; Mountain Bluebird; Sage Thrasher; Brewer’s Sparrow; Yellow-headed Blackbird. Winter—Greater White-fronted and Ross’s Geese; Ferruginous Hawk.
