The Crescent City area has a great variety of habitats in a fairly compact region. There are offshore rookeries, rocky headlands, mixed conifer forests, sandy flats, lagoons, a protected harbor with a breakwater, and a redwood forest at Jedediah Smith Redwoods State Park. Redwood National Park officially begins at Crescent City and extends south to Prairie Creek Redwoods State Park. Specialty birds: Resident—Pelagic Cormorant, Black Oystercatcher, Western Gull, Marbled Murrelet, Hutton’s Vireo, Chestnut-backed Chickadee, Varied Thrush, Wrentit. Summer—Brown Pelican, Brandt’s Cormorant, Heermann’s Gull, Elegant Tern, Pigeon Guillemot, Tufted Puffin, Band-tailed Pigeon, Vaux’s Swift, Allen’s Hummingbird, Pacificslope Flycatcher. Winter—Western and Clark’s Grebes; Harlequin Duck; Bald Eagle; Black Turnstone; Surfbird; Rock Sandpiper; Mew and Glaucous-winged Gulls. Migrant—Pacific Loon, “Aleutian” Canada Goose, Wandering Tattler.
