The Altamaha Waterfowl Management Area is one of the best overall sites in Georgia, worth a visit in any season. The birdable areas are broken up into three sections. The first is the series of sometimes-flooded former rice fields on the east side of US Highway 17. Second is the part of the WMA north of the Champney River, on the west side of US 17. This area has several ponds and fields and a forested dike area good for passerine migrants. Both these areas are part of Butler Island. The third is the area south of the Champney, west of US 17, called Champney Island, where there are sometimes-flooded fields and a large impoundment with an observation tower. This area usually has water even when the fields are dry and is always worth checking. Hunting is allowed, and if you are coming in the fall, check with DNR about hunting dates. Key Birds: Mottled Duck, Least Bittern, Glossy Ibis, Black-necked Stilt, Bald Eagle, rails, American Bittern, Painted Bunting, Wood Stork, Northern Harrier, swallows, sparrows, ducks. This eTrail provides detailed information on birding strategies for this specific location, the specialty birds and other key birds you might see, directions to each birding spot, and helpful general information.
