Sapelo Island is a limited-access barrier island with lots of great beach and inland habitat. Unfortunately, for birding purposes it is difficult to get to. This is the only place in Georgia to find the Plain Chachalaca, and the only place in the United States to find them outside Texas. These birds were introduced in the 1920s. The beaches are long and have relatively few people on them, which is favorable for the very few Long-billed Curlews that winter on the Georgia coast. Other beach species are also found here, and receive much less pressure than their counterparts on more-developed islands. Painted Buntings are fairly common in spring and summer and can be easily found all over the island in the scrub areas between the forest and the beach. Just like any island on the coast, Sapelo is a great place to be for both spring and fall migration. Key birds: Plain Chachalaca, Long-billed Curlew, Painted Bunting, shorebirds, gulls, terns. This eTrail provides detailed information on birding strategies for this specific location, the specialty birds and other key birds you might see, directions to each birding spot, and helpful general information.
