This small spoil site is not currently receiving fresh spoil, and is wet only after rain. This is crucial to birding, because when it is dry, the ducks and shorebirds are simply not here. The single impoundment is walk-in only, and the loop around it is 1.8 miles long. Shrub surrounds the impoundment, which can be good for sparrows in winter and migrants spring and fall. When wet, this is one of only two fairly reliable sites for avocets in Georgia. The surrounding marsh is always worth checking for ducks, waders, and rails, and the nearby Savannah National Wildlife Refuge just across the border in South Carolina is excellent for ducks in winter. Key birds: American Avocet, Stilt Sandpiper, Mottled Duck, Common Ground-Dove. This eTrail provides detailed information on birding strategies for this specific location, the specialty birds and other key birds you might see, directions to each birding spot, and helpful general information.
