This is the only spot in Georgia that has been reliable in recent years for Short-eared Owls. It is a series of cotton and other fields that has had this species in winter for at least the past five years. Included in this section are other nearby spots also worth birding. The Cordele Fish Hatchery has several small ponds to bird for sparrows or ducks when the ponds have water, and Lake Blackshear has a few gulls and ducks, although it is fairly developed. A small golf course pond frequently has Redhead ducks. Key birds: Short-eared Owl, Northern Harrier, Vesper Sparrow. This eTrail provides detailed information on birding strategies for this specific location, the specialty birds and other key birds you might see, directions to each birding spot, and helpful general information.
