Lake Seminole WMA consists of a series of discrete parcels of land along the shoreline of Lake Seminole in the extreme southwest corner of Georgia. There are two major river systems entering the lake (Chattahoochee and Flint), and the portions of the WMA along these rivers are excellent in spring and fall for migrant landbirds. In winter the lake gets a good population of ducks and sparrows at various locations, and although it is very hot in summer there are some breeding species worth looking for. In general, each location in this section will be identified as a migrant, duck, sparrow, or combination spot. For migrant landbird spots, walk whatever trails are available for such species as flycatchers, thrushes, vireos, warblers, and tanagers. Look for mixed flocks of birds moving through the woods searching for food, and concentrate along wood edges or waterways. For ducks, scan whatever water is available. At sparrow spots, work the brushy or wood edge areas. As you drive the roads, scan ponds for ducks, waders, or Anhingas, if you have a wide enough road shoulder to stop on. Key birds: Canvasback, Purple Gallinule, Bald Eagle, Bachman’s Sparrow. This eTrail provides detailed information on birding strategies for this specific location, the specialty birds and other key birds you might see, directions to each birding spot, and helpful general information.
