This wetland was formerly a forest that was transformed by the filling of Lake Oconee. The rising water drowned the trees, and the seasonal rising and falling water level created a mudflat. In late summer this area is managed for waders—and there can be dozens and dozens on any given day. A cooperative project of the USDA Forest Service, Georgia DNR, Georgia Power, and Ducks Unlimited, Dyar Pasture now has a dike and water control system to maintain water levels at optimum for the habitat. If the summer has been very rainy, however, this area may have too much water for waders. Although it is part of Redlands WMA, this is a sanctuary with no hunting allowed. The surrounding forest also has good land-birding possibilities in spring through fall. Key birds: Wood Stork, waders, Cliff Swallow, ducks, shorebirds. This eTrail provides detailed information on birding strategies for this specific location, the specialty birds and other key birds you might see, directions to each birding spot, and helpful general information.
