This site is a loose collection of several lakes and some nearby areas for other good birding opportunities. It is set up as a huge loop, one that would take all day to run, but each of these spots can be birded alone, or in any combination. All of the lakes with dam access can hold some ducks during migration, but Lake Oconee and to a lesser extent Lake Juliette are the only ones that almost always have a few birds somewhere. All the deepwater areas can have Common Loons or Horned Grebes in winter, and if you can get below the spillway you may find gulls as well, usually only Ring-billed in winter or Bonaparte’s in migration. Directions to a couple of WMAs with good duck habitat are also included. All these lakes are worth exploring if you have time but will require a local map to do so. If you can only go to one of these sites, it should be Lake Oconee. Key birds: Migrant waterfowl, Horned Grebe, gulls. This eTrail provides detailed information on birding strategies for this specific location, the specialty birds and other key birds you might see, directions to each birding spot, and helpful general information.
