These two small areas offer some great birding right next to the city of Macon, and can easily be birded in a couple of hours from good paved roads. Central City Park is an open, manicured park on the bank of the Ocmulgee River with the only reliable nesting Baltimore Orioles in the state. Lower Poplar Street leaves the city behind and offers some excellent habitat for interesting breeding species as well as migrants. Brushy fields, wet pastures, and wet swampy woods occur right next to one another and can provide lots of migrants during spring or fall. This is the farthest spot north and inland to expect Common Ground-Doves (all year) or Painted Buntings (summer). Though this site description leads you to the park first, during spring migration you may want to pass by the park to check for migrants along Lower Poplar Street while it is early, and try the park later. This area is very close to Ocmulgee National Monument. Key birds: Baltimore Oriole, Common Ground-Dove, Painted Bunting. This eTrail provides detailed information on birding strategies for this specific location, the specialty birds and other key birds you might see, directions to each birding spot, and helpful general information.
