This loop is about 50 miles long, and will take about four hours. The loop starts at the E. L. Huie Land Application Facility, and takes you to three different lakes for an all-around waterfowl day. Sometimes this loop can be very productive, with ten or more species of duck and various other species around the lakes, but sometimes the ducks are more scattered. All of the lakes have deep enough water to attract divers, and one has shallow weedy edges favored by dabblers. Two of the lakes have good land-birding habitat around them as well. A scope is very helpful for distant ducks. (A note of caution: Do NOT try this loop if there is a race at the Atlanta Motor Speedway, as the traffic is atrocious for hours before and after.) This is also a good loop to try in summer for typical lower Piedmont brush breeders such as Indigo Bunting, Blue Grosbeak, Orchard Oriole, and Yellow-breasted Chat. Key birds: Waterfowl, sparrows. This eTrail provides detailed information on birding strategies for this specific location, the specialty birds and other key birds you might see, directions to each birding spot, and helpful general information.
