The E. L. Huie Land Application Facility is a 4,000-acre wastewater treatment site about 20 miles south of downtown Atlanta, and is a must-visit location for nearly the entire year. Featuring a series of ponds that can be great in migration for shorebirds and equally good for ducks in winter, as well as a boardwalk trail and several other birdable areas, E. L. Huie has also built up an impressive list of rarities over the years. There are five ponds, four roughly square ones of more or less equal size (although one currently has a buildup of dirt replacing some of the water), and a much larger one on the south end of the complex called, appropriately enough, the South Pond. In winter most of the ponds remain full and house a good population of duck species. The next most significant section to bird in this area is the nearby Newman Wetlands Center, a new area of swampy woods with a very nice 0.5-mile combination boardwalk and trail, and an interpretive nature center with nature and water-cycle exhibits. Key birds: Ducks and shorebirds at E. L. Huie; Prothonotary Warbler, Louisiana Waterthrush, and Winter Wren at Newman Wetlands Center.
