This section will cover West Point Lake Dam and the Blanton Creek Wildlife Management Area. Whereas the entire lake can be good birding, this section concentrates on the dam area for waterfowl, which is one of the best areas for these migrants in Georgia. The dam is also good in winter for gulls, and has hosted several rarities over the past few years. Blanton Creek WMA is not far downstream on the Chattahoochee River, and has a good marsh area for dabbling ducks as well as some good general land-birding in forests and fields. The two dams to the south on the Chattahoochee River (Lake Harding and Goat Rock) are currently off-limits to birding, but directions are included in the hope that these areas will once again become accessible. Key birds: Common Loon, Horned Grebe, gulls, ducks, Wild Turkey. This eTrail provides detailed information on birding strategies for this specific location, the specialty birds and other key birds you might see, directions to each birding spot, and helpful general information.
