This section consists of two similar sites, Thomas Brothers Grass Farm near Rome and the Atlanta Sod Farm near Cartersville. Both are working sod farms, and require permission to bird from on-site offices. The birding is very simple— merely drive along dirt roads within the sod farm and look for shorebirds and other species of interest working the grassy or dirt areas. A scope is very helpful for distant birds, as you must stay on established roads. There are a few shorebirds in spring; most of the best birding is in fall. In addition to shorebirds, you may find other open area species and also woodland species in areas near the actual farms. Key birds: Buff-breasted, Upland, Pectoral, and Least Sandpipers; American Golden Plover; Horned Lark; American Pipit; swallows; sparrows. This eTrail provides detailed information on birding strategies for this specific location, the specialty birds and other key birds you might see, directions to each birding spot, and helpful general information.
