Mexico Beach is the western end of the Forgotten Coast, the part of the Panhandle stretching through Apalachicola to Carrabelle that development has largely ignored. The remarkable thing about the 1,200-person community is that there’s not a single chain motel or chain restaurant in town. The beaches are the same wonderful white sand as elsewhere, but it’s a place that time has forgotten—an unchanged old Florida town, which are quite common inland in this neck of the woods but rather rare on the prized coast. Cruising US 98 west, the next beaches are on the sprawling property of Tyndall Air Force Base, virtually unused wilderness areas that are postcard perfect. Secluded beaches like Camp Helen State Park begin cropping up. This eTrail includes detailed descriptions of these beaches: Mexico Beach, Crooked Island East—Tyndall Air Force Base, Crooked Island West—Tyndall Air Force Base, St. Andrews State Park and Shell Island, Bay County Pier, City Pier—Panama City Beach, and Camp Helen State Park.
