The Venice beaches are some of the prettiest in the lower Gulf, especially south of the Venice Inlet where there are still rolling dunes and long expanses of undeveloped beach like Caspersen Beach. Like most of the communities of southern Sarasota County, Venice rolls along relatively unchanged and its own slow place. The coastline around Venice has largely been protected from development, and there are no “pink monsters” among the modest homes. North Jetty Park is still the same great fishing and surfing hangout it was twenty years ago. Sarasota is an honest-to-goodness city these days, home of the prestigious New College, the Ringling Museum of Art, and many other cultural attractions. Public beach access disappears completely throughout the entire length of Longboat Key, but is thankfully restored on the Bradenton beaches on Anna Maria Island. Seven and a half miles of funky old Florida, there are no fast-food restaurants and no major hotels on the entire island. It’s just old seaside inns and cottages, with Australian pines and dirt parking lots at the beaches. The area was developed in the early 1900s by the “father of the Fig Newton,” Charles Roser. This eTrail includes detailed descriptions of these beaches: Caspersen Beach, Venice Pier/Brohard Park, North Jetty Beach, Turtle Beach/Palmer Point Beach, Siesta Key Beach Park, Lido Beach/North Lido Beach, Coquina Beach/Cortez Beach, Manatee Beach, and Egmont Key State Park.
