As you come across the Georgia border, Amelia Island is the first section of coast that welcomes you to Florida. As an introduction to Florida beaches, it’s a great start. The historic town of Fernandina sits at the north end, dating back to times of pirates and lawlessness in the frontier era of the various countries colonizing Florida. Fort Clinch, a Civil War–era fort, is a state park that encompasses wide swaths of beautiful beach, woods, marsh, and many other attractions. A cross-state railroad ran from Fernandina to Cedar Key in the latter part of the nineteenth century, the brainchild of state senator David Levy Yulee, and that explains the appearance of his name in small forgotten communities on both coasts. On the north side of the St. John’s River near Jacksonville, the Huguenot Memorial Park occupies a huge peninsula of wild beaches and great fishing opportunities. On the south side, Hanna Park is another great county park developed with countless recreational opportunities. South of Jacksonville Beach, the coast stays private through Ponte Vedra for many miles before you arrive at Guana River State Park, another great public area of vast wetlands and untrammeled beaches.
