Explore the Westwood Nature Trail or just wander at a leisurely pace along a 1.5-mile-long beach on Long Island Sound at Connecticut’s first state park, Sherwood Island. If you’d rather walk with a purpose than meander aimlessly, start at the far eastern end of the park’s beach. Continue west on the beach to a fence at the western edge of the park. Turn right, leaving the beach, to enter a picnic grove on higher ground. The grove rises a few feet above the surrounding marsh; this higher area provides a vantage point and observation post for bird-watchers. When conditions are favorable and with proper footgear, the marsh may be investigated with care. After the walk head to the roof deck of the pavilion for a panoramic view of the park grounds, Long Island Sound, and on a clear day, New York City. Should the weather be too blustery to picnic comfortably at an outside table, there is a protective glass screen on the pavilion’s lower level. This mammoth picture window provides a pleasant outlook to the sound and also affords unexpected warmth when the sun shines through it.
