The blue-blazed Metacomet Trail passes over the peaks of the Hanging Hills of Meriden. West Peak, with an elevation of 1,024 feet, offers one of the finest views in Connecticut. East Peak is not quite as high at 976 feet but is home to Castle Craig, a lookout tower up which you may climb for absolutely spectacular views of central Connecticut to Long Island Sound (depending on weather conditions). The famed landmark “sleeping giant” of Sleeping Giant State Park can also be seen quite clearly to the south—try to pick out his head, torso, and legs. Many mountains surround the city of Meriden; looking north it is possible to see the Oz-like towers of Hartford on the horizon.
