For a heady and breathtaking climb, Bluff Head on the Mattabesett Trail in the town of Guilford is a sure thing. A path a mountain goat would love takes you to the very brink of a dizzying view that encompasses Hartford to the north and Long Island Sound to the south; Rhode Island can be glimpsed on a clear day. In the summer it’s a cool walk under beech, oak, and maple trees—unlike many other traprock ridges, this trail winds along rock that faces east. Follow best routes either to the junction of Routes 17 and 77 in Durham or to the intersection of Routes 77 and 80 in Guilford, whichever is nearer. The Mattabesett Trail leading to Bluff Head crosses Route 77 about halfway between Route 17 (Durham) and Route 80 (Guilford). The distance is about 4.3 miles from Route 80 and 4 miles from Route 17.
